Assalamualaikum wa Rahmatullah,

Here are my notes for class 2. Be ready with your assignments for the next class. We will have a special guest to judge who will have the best reflection from the Quran. Whoever wins will get a special prize from me Inshallah.

Usool al-tafseer:

Case study:

Irfan Shahid on Huroof Al-Muqattiaat: "These letters are sounds of revelations that Prophet couldn't hear, as he was not ready to take revelation. So he left them as he heard. He was being truthful and did not make up stuff" Proof: Letters would never come in the middle or in the end. Always would be in the beginning.

Importance of the science: every other field is to make the tafseer of the Quran.

How do you differentiate between what is authentic explanation and what is not?

Sources of tafseer:
-Quran itself.
--Ayah about contradictions in the Quran.
--Sirat al lathena an amta alaihim: nabiyyin, siddiqeen, Shuhadah, saaliheen.
--Dua of ibrahim:

-Sunnah
--importance of Sunnah

JZ p71.

--- level of Sunnah in deriving rulings
Tangent: Hadith authenticity.
Sahih
Hasan
Daeef
Daeef jiddan
Maudoo

What makes Hadith saheeh?
1. Continuity
2. Must be acceptable
3. Must have credibility
4. Must not contradict something of higher authority
5. Hidden defect

Quran and Sunnah are equal in authority.
Nahl 44: explain the dhikr.
Hijr 9: it is we who revealed the dhikr and we will protect it.
Protection of the Quran refers to just the words, and not the meaning. How is this possible?

Examples: dhulm, yadd in hadd, shortening the prayer when travelling.  

-Companions:
If you say that companions didn't understand the quran well, you are saying that the prophet failed in teaching them ( naoozubillah)

-saw Asbab an nuzool
-revealed because of them
-taught by the prophet
-prophet made Dua for them
-best generation. Free of corruption
-Allah praised them in the Quran.

How to we explain differences in opinion amongst sahabah?
It's personal ijtihaad. But what is silently agreed upon is taken.

How about tabieen?
We give them precedence over others, but by themselves they are not sources.

-Arabic language:
Yusuf 2
Ibn tayyimiyah: Wajib to learn Arabic.

Schools in learning:
-grammar centred
-vocab centered.



Types of tafseer:
-tafseer bil ma'thoor
-tafseer bil raiy
--praise worthy
--Blame worthy




Tools of tafseer:
-Aam verses
-Khaas verses

-mutluq
-muqayyid

-muntuq
-mafhoom
--Mafhoom al mukhalafah
--mafhoom al muwafaqah.


Ramadan reminders:

Qirat: check out abuhuraira last 2 rakah.

Make Dua when ayat are recited:
Ali: subhanallah when sura ala was recited. Jannah and jahannam.

Just to clarify... When I gave references for the material from "Usool al-Tafseer", specially about the tools of Mufassir, i.e. Aam vs. Khaas, mutluq vs. muqayyid, muntuq vs. mafhoom, I actually didn't learn them from the book. I studied those from Sh. Moutasem and my mentor Zohair. I consulted the book only for the examples.
